The Opera Group Sep 24 2010 at 07:30pm in the EHSLI Building The Opera Group will meet on Friday, September 24 at 7:30pm. The topic is Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino.
Verdi’s opera La Forza del Destino is one of his most dramatic operas, with many great arias and duets throughout. Tonight, we’ll learn the story by seeing excerpts from each of the acts. In addition, we will listen to Verdi’s music sung by legendary singers. As usual, I’ll play several versions of the same aria or duet to see which you like better, and I’ll also include a “mystery singer” contest for fun. For more information contact Mel Haber at 718-279-3143.
Our Times Coffeehouse Sep 24 2010 at 08:00pm in the EHSLI Building Our Times Coffeehouse will be at the Ethical Humanist Society Building on Friday, September 24 at 8pm. The featured artist is Vance Gilbert. Vance Gilbert is a formidable vocalist. His voice has the beauty of a choral singer, the strength and control of Broadway's finest, the power of lead rock singers and enough play to match any comedic imitator. Vance burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking 'em dead at open mics. Once word got to New York and this Philadelphia-area born and raised performer, Shawn Colvin invited Gilbert to be a special guest on her Fat City tour. Gilbert took audiences across the country by storm. "With the voice of an angel, the wit of a devil, and the guitar playing of a god, it was enough to earn him that rarity: an encore for an opener".
Watching Vance live onstage is like witnessing a one-man "Robin Williams, George Benson, Garrison Keillor, and Al Jarreau.--THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
