Youth of Ethical Societies - YES
September - June
Sundays 11am - 12pm
Long Island Y.E.S. is a group of high
school students that are determined to make the world a better place.
Below are examples of the activities incorporated in the program:
Community Service:
One year, we planned a holiday toy
drive known as "Project Shoebox." Members of the society donated new toys, and
we organized them into shoeboxes and delivered them to a children's shelter
for the holidays.
Conferences:
Each November, members of the YES Group
meet up with members of other societies around the United States for our
annual "YES Weekend Conference."
Social
Action:
On January 18th, 2003, our group
traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the anti-war on Iraq rally. It
was an amazing experience, and we decided to attend another protest on
February 15th in New York. This rally went just as well. Despite the freezing
cold weather and lack of a permit to march, an estimated 500,000 people showed
up and walked through the streets while blocking traffic. Millions of people
around the world were said to have marched that day, and we can only hope we
helped to make a difference. This issue of war with Iraq is one that the
entire Ethical Society and YES Group feels the same about: we are
against it!
YES
Platform:
The war in Iraq was the topic for the
2003 annual YES platform. Our platforms always include multi-media
presentations, and are quite enjoyable. As with all platforms, this is open to
the public and all are welcome to attend.
Pasta
Dinner:
Our other annual event is the YES Pasta
Dinner in May. Our Group will plan the entire dinner, including food and
plenty of entertainment. Representatives from social action organizations are
invited to speak.
