42 Years and Counting as a Psychiatrist: The Humanist Lessons It Taught Me

After more than forty years of sitting with patients in some of their darkest and most alive moments, Randy has come to see human experience as moving between two poles: the loneliness that can make life feel unbearable and the connection and shared delight contemplative traditions call sympathetic joy. Drawing on decades of clinical experience, he will reflect on what allows us to move along that continuum, why it cannot be traveled alone, and why trust, vulnerability, and the courage to be known are essential to the journey. He offers these reflections with humility about the limits of explanation, but also with candor about what he has witnessed from the chair beside his patients. Together, we will consider how connection becomes possible, and how even small acts of trust and openness can begin to move us toward it.

Randy Solomon, MD, is a psychiatrist with over 4 decades of clinical experience. His work with patients over many decades, along with extensive experience in forensic psychiatry at the intersection of law and psychiatry, has deeply shaped his understanding of suffering, trust, shame, authenticity, responsibility, compassion, and human connection. He is the founder and medical director of Island Psychiatry, PC, the founder of Island Practice Management, LLC (a managed service organization), and is currently developing Carbon Psych Systems, a company focused on managing all aspects of psychiatric legal consultations.
