Dr. Anne Klaeysen - The Encampment for Citizenship: Upholding Democracy, Justice, and Youth Empowerment (HYBRID)

The Encampment for Citizenship, founded in 1946 by Ethical Culture Leader Algernon D. Black and Alice (“Nanny”) Politzer, a prominent civic leader, offered an opportunity for “young adults of many religious, racial, social and national backgrounds” to learn “the principles and techniques of citizenship… through lived experience.” Black believed that young people could be a positive force in their communities if they developed critical thinking skills, youth activism, leadership qualities, and the courage to break free from stereotypes. Today The Encampment prepares young people to be informed, responsible and effective global citizens working for social justice through experiential learning and through living in a diverse, democratic community. It provides youth with a compelling experience in democratic living, with emphasis on critical thinking and social justice in action.

Dr. Anne Klaeysen is Leader Emerita of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. She holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in pastoral care and counseling from Hebrew Union College, as well as masters’ degrees in German from SUNY Albany and business administration from NYU. Anne serves on the boards of The Encampment for Citizenship, Ethical Culture Fieldston Schools, and the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, where she and her husband Glenn Newman were married and raised their children.
