Joan Beder and her family have been long-term members of EHS. She has served on the board of the Society several times over the years and was co-President of the Society several years ago.

Joan is Professor Emeritus at Yeshiva University,  Wurzweiler School of Social Work.  She is still actively teaching at Yeshiva and carries a significant course load, all of her teaching is done on Zoom.  The courses she teaches are offered to Masters and Doctoral students and are focused on various aspects of social work counseling and practice.

She has authored several books on issues related to social work, had dozens of articles published and spoken at many conferences all of which have focused on the practice of social work. Her areas of particular interest and research have been social work practice with the military, oncology social work and working with issues related to coping with loss…Throughout her teaching, she has always included discussions of issues that are based on ethical decision-making as they relate to social work practice.

She has two grown sons, both married and a “spectacular”grandson” Matthew, who is 22 years old.
