Many people have the idea that opera involves overweight singers standing on stage and bellowing loud noises in a boring, sleep inducing production. That may be true, to some extent, when the singing, staging and conducting is poor to mediocre. Mel Haber would like to demonstrate, on the other hand, that opera singing can be beautiful and exciting if the singers are wonderful and the music melodic. Come to this program to see and hear videos of great singers singing the most popular of arias, duets and quartets. Because so many people like to compare singers, I am going to include three arias each sung by two different singers. After hearing each aria, we will get to discuss which singer we liked better and why.

You don’t have to know anything about opera, nor do you ever have to have gone to an opera to appreciate this program. You are welcome even if you have a negative opinion of the opera you have heard so far. Some of the music you will hear is so famous that it’s likely you will recognize and enjoy many of the arias and duets that will be played.
