My Lost World of Slatersville

Through memories of a Depression boyhood in a small farming village in New England, I explore what has been lost to time and what has not been and what I am happy to have lost and what I miss. Though I set this personal meditation on loss against the background of the great national events of the time, including World War II, it hopefully bears on the events of our present troubling times.

David Israel was for fifty years an English teacher, first in Attleboro,Massachusetts where he was a chairman of the department and then for more than forty years in East Williston at the Wheatley School where he was a team leader. He taught also briefly at UC Berkeley and as a Teaching Fellow at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard. From the early 70’s he was first Chief Negotiator and then president of the East Williston Teachers Association. He also led political action for the New York State United Teachers and briefly served on its governing board. He was the recipient of the Charles H. Smith scholarship at Harvard, where he also received a Bowdoin Prize for writing. He was the nominee for a Rhodes Scholarship from the state of Rhode Island; he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and he was twice recognized by the House of Representatives for his service to the cause of public education.
