Susan Gottehrer: Building Power Toward Hope and Light: Using Our Values to End Mass Incarceration and Deportations (HYBRID)

Wisdom, Justice, and Hope for Tomorrow

Since the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, the United States has found numerous ways to continue criminalizing people along racial lines, routinely warehousing them, depriving them of their rights, and forcing them to work for little or no wages. There is an intentional through-line from slavery to mass incarceration in this country. Advocates are working tirelessly to reform the system and to address the recent kidnappings of immigrants, made possible by the same practice of dehumanization.

Susan Gottehrer is the Director of the Nassau County chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union, the state affiliate of the ACLU, and has been an active member of the New York Civil Liberties family since 2006. She has dedicated her career to advancing immigration, reproductive, and voting rights, as well as promoting police and criminal justice reform. Susan holds a Master’s degree in Education from Columbia University, a Master’s in Political Science from the New School for Social Research, and a Master’s in Public Administration/Policy Analysis from New York University. She teaches graduate courses on Government and Radical Social Movements at Pace University, Adelphi University, and Long Island University, and brings eight years of experience in public relations to her work.
